Introduction: Green Living is No Longer Optional

A 2023 study by the European Commission revealed that 78% of consumers prioritize eco-friendly products when choosing home and garden items. As sustainability shifts from trend to expectation, procurement managers across Europe are seeking partners who deliver not only performance and design, but also environmental responsibility.

I’m Catrina, CEO of Hongmao Garden, and today, I want to show you how we’re walking the talk. From recyclable galvanized steel to on-site solar power generation, our commitment to green innovation goes far beyond compliance—it's part of who we are.

The Current Landscape: Garden Aesthetics Meet Green Mandates

Where the Market is Going

With regulations like the EU Green Deal and increased scrutiny on product lifecycles, the garden and outdoor sector is under pressure to evolve. Procurement decisions are no longer just about price or aesthetics—they hinge on a product's environmental impact.

Major European retailers are now demanding full traceability and material transparency. This includes:

  • Use of low-emission, recyclable materials

  • Factory certifications like EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment)

  • Demonstrable efforts to lower carbon footprint (e.g., solar energy)

The Problem Most Suppliers Ignore

Unfortunately, many manufacturers still use non-recyclable plastics or high-emission powder coatings, simply because they’re cheaper or easier. While these shortcuts may reduce costs temporarily, they lead to:

  • Non-compliance with evolving EU standards

  • Higher long-term costs from customer returns or negative PR

  • Lost business opportunities due to low ESG scores

We knew this had to change. So we did more than just adapt—we reimagined.

Our Green Material Strategy: Recyclable, Durable, Stylish

Why Galvanized Steel?

Our core material is powder-coated galvanized steel, which:

  • Is 100% recyclable, contributing to circular production

  • Resists rust and corrosion, minimizing waste from replacements

  • Retains its modern aesthetic for years without fading

We source our steel from certified EU-compliant suppliers, and all products meet REACH and RoHS directives.

Eco-Conscious Design Choices

Even small parts matter. Our hinges, handles, and screws are selected based on longevity and recyclability. We prioritize modular design so that damaged parts can be replaced—not the whole unit.

Design Insight: Our "planting roof" garbage bin box allows customers to create green spaces on even the most utilitarian products.

Energy Efficiency at the Source: Solar-Powered Manufacturing

In 2024, we began installing photovoltaic solar panels across our Suzhou factory roofs. Once fully operational, they’ll supply over 40% of our energy needs, directly reducing our dependence on coal-powered electricity.

Benefits to You

  • Lower embedded carbon in every unit you purchase

  • Easier to meet corporate sustainability goals

  • Enhanced ESG reports for your downstream partners

Result Validation: Since Q3 2024, we’ve reduced our factory's monthly carbon emissions by over 15 tons, verified through third-party audits.

Future-Proofing with Material Innovation

Our R&D team (30% of our workforce) is experimenting with:

  • Bio-resins for non-metal components

  • Water-based coatings that eliminate VOCs

  • Smart sensors to monitor long-term outdoor wear

These innovations aim to help buyers future-proof their inventory against upcoming legislation while offering a competitive edge.

Coming Soon: Our 2025 lineup will include a "Zero-Plastic" raised bed model using hybrid galvanized-steel and bamboo fiber composites.

Expert Citation Box

"The integration of solar panels and recyclable steel in garden furniture production represents a forward-thinking response to the EU’s sustainability roadmap. It’s rare to see a mid-size manufacturer lead in both design and environmental compliance."— Dr. Ingrid Maier, Institute for Sustainable Design, Berlin
